A Father's Heart: Michael Seger's Journey of Faith and Leadership in Uganda

A Father's Heart: Michael Seger's Journey of Faith and Leadership in Uganda

Fatherhood often takes unexpected turns, but few could imagine the incredible path that Michael Seger’s journey has taken him on. From the classrooms of Mississippi to the vibrant communities of Uganda, Michael has embodied what it means to be a father—not just to his own children but to countless others he’s served through education, ministry, and mentorship.

In 2018, Michael, his wife Kellie, and their two young sons took a leap of faith, moving to Mbarara, Uganda, to serve as missionaries. With a passion for education and discipleship, the Segers poured their hearts into building relationships, sharing the Gospel, and meeting the needs of vulnerable children. Over time, their family grew—through both adoption and the birth of their youngest son in Uganda—and Michael’s role as a father deepened in ways he had never anticipated.

“In Uganda, titles like ‘Dad’ or ‘Uncle’ reflect a culture of collective care, respect, and relational depth. Being called ‘Dad’ is more than a title—it’s an opportunity to love, support, and guide my own sons and the many children I’ve been privileged to know. It’s a chance to model the importance of healthy relationships—especially a life-changing relationship with Jesus.”

Partnering with Hope Alive!

After two years of ministry in Mbarara, Michael and Kellie and the board of UG2, the nonprofit organization that sent them to Uganda, agreed they should find new partners whose ministry practice and doctrine more closely aligned with their convictions. Through missionary friends familiar with Hope Alive!, the Segers met founder Catharine Coon at the Masaka site. In 2020, after a great deal of prayer to discern God’s leading, they joined the Hope Alive! team. Michael stepped into the role of Education Specialist, and in 2021, their family moved to Gulu, where Michael’s fatherly heart found deeper purpose through serving students and schools in northern Uganda.

Michael’s role involves far more than overseeing educational programs. From organizing literacy initiatives and training teachers to mentoring students and collaborating with local churches, Michael has dedicated himself to creating opportunities for children to thrive. Yet it’s the personal connections—visiting students in their schools, leading Bible studies, injecting fun and laughter into daily activities, and encouraging caregivers—that reflect his fatherly care.

“My hope,” Michael shares, “is that these children will not only excel academically but also grow in their faith and become godly leaders in their communities.”

A Legacy of Faith

Through his work with Hope Alive!, Michael has seen firsthand how education and discipleship transform lives. Whether teaching biology during the pandemic, organizing mobile dental outreaches, or championing literacy programs, Michael’s efforts extend far beyond the classroom. His passion for empowering children is rooted in his faith and his calling as a father.

Perhaps most inspiring is the example Michael sets for his own children. He and Kellie have nurtured a family culture of service, showing their sons what it means to live out their faith and love others selflessly. During their recent sabbatical, the Segers celebrated their four oldest sons’ public profession of faith in Jesus and subsequent baptisms.

“Being a father—especially while living cross-culturally—is humbling,” Michael says. “It’s not about having all the answers, but finding my identity in Christ rather than in a title or location, and letting His kindness and grace shape the way I lead and love.

A Father to Many

This Father’s Day, we celebrate the extraordinary fatherhood of men like Michael Seger, who model the love of God in their homes and communities. Michael’s story reminds us that fatherhood is a ministry—a calling to lead, nurture, and inspire the next generation. As Michael continues to serve with Hope Alive!, his life is a testimony to the impact one father’s heart can have in the lives of many.
