Fun Days Let Kids Be Kids
Play is an essential tool in a child’s development journey. With play, children are able to discover the world around them, expand their imaginations, develop their cognitive skills and grow in their interpersonal communication abilities. Play is so essential to a child’s development that the United Nations recognizes play as a fundamental right for a child (Article 31, UNCRC 1989)!
Unfortunately, many of the children that we work with don’t have time to play, or their caregivers do not value having fun. That’s why we created Fun Days. During school breaks, our sites plan a special day JUST FOR FUN! Oftentimes, they swim, dance, explore or engage in a variety of other activities and games. There are no lessons, limited sitting, and lots and lots of laughter. We strive to make sure that every child experiences the best parts of childhood; we let children be children.
At the end of this year’s first school term, our site in Kampala took the students to the North Shore of Lake Victoria for their fun day, and the students had a great time. They played beach soccer where the boys played against the girls. They did aerobics on the beach, led by one of the students. Some students went on a boat ride around the lake, others enjoyed swimming, and a few enjoyed just sitting and catching the nice breeze while watching their friends.
They concluded the day with a wonderful meal and big smiles. We are glad that our students are able to create memories together and tap into their God-given potential, exploring their different passions.
