GJ: A Father's Heart for Uganda

GJ: A Father's Heart for Uganda

Gertjan (GJ) grew up in the Netherlands, where he accepted Christ at a young age.  He moved to the US after high school and at a small Christian university his faith grew.  There he felt God’s call for overseas ministry.  His path led him around the world, from Curaçao to China, Tanzania, and Uganda, as he sought to serve those in need and live out his calling. Through his travels, studies, and work, one thing remained constant—his desire to nurture and invest in people, much like a father does for his children.

In 2013, GJ married Kate, and together they began building a life centered on faith, love, and service. The couple felt a clear call to northern Uganda, where they moved in early 2017. It was there that GJ’s role as a father truly began to take shape, not only to his two sons, Ben and Isaiah, but also to countless young people in the Hope Alive community who look up to him as a mentor and guide.

Fatherhood at Home and in the Community

For GJ, fatherhood is a calling that extends beyond the walls of his home. As the Economic Development Officer for Hope Alive!, he uses his skills and passion to create opportunities for families to thrive. From microloans to agricultural training and forestry projects, GJ’s work is designed to provide sustainable solutions that help parents provide for their children and give the next generation a foundation for success.

Yet, his most cherished role remains at home, where he strives to be a present and intentional father to Ben and Isaiah. Whether he’s exploring nature with his boys, teaching them life lessons, or sharing stories of faith, GJ models the values of integrity, compassion, and dedication. His love for his children inspires his work with Hope Alive!, where he mentors students and alumni, helping them grow into confident, God-centered adults.

GJ’s fatherly spirit is also evident in his approach to work and relationships. He is deeply committed to discipleship, investing in the spiritual and personal growth of those around him. One of the highlights of his ministry is discipling male alumni and older students through the Man Up and Go program, with a strong focus on being a good Christian husband and father.  Many of the Hope Alive alumni and students have never experienced or seen a good example of a Christian role model, other than their Hope Alive! mentors. It’s awesome to see the young men learning and putting what they have learned into practice as they marry and have children of their own. GJ hopes God will continue to work in the hearts of the men, so they will break the destructive cycle of father absenteeism and abuse.

For GJ, fatherhood is about more than providing; it’s about leaving a legacy of love, faith, and service. Whether he’s spending quality time with his sons or empowering others through his work with Hope Alive!, GJ’s life is a reflection of the Father’s heart.
