Juliet's Story: A Modest Gift Turned into an Economic Opportunity
Juliet is a 37-year-old disabled widow with four children. Although she dreamed of all of her children going to school, and someday even graduating from university, she had no way of earning a living in order to pay for the cost of their education. Her disability left her unable to walk and unable to find employment, but her determination was remarkable. She would crawl from one place to another to gather clothes, wash them by hand in a small basin and earn just enough money to put food on the table and pay for rent. The family was struggling, wondering how things would change for them.
Seeing the desperate need of the family, Hope Alive! enrolled one of the boys, Elijah, in 2021. That Christmas, Elijah’s sponsor sent him a $30 Christmas gift. Through the guidance of Hope Alive! staff, Juliet, or "Mama Elijah," used some of the money to buy a piglet, which the family raised and sold for a profit. They then purchased a knitting machine, which Juliet immediately put to work making sweaters—she already knew how to knit! In a few short months, Mama Elijah had made enough money to send her three remaining children to school with the profit from selling her sweaters to nearby schools and people in her community.
Soon thereafter, Hope Alive! staff connected Mama Elijah with a local church, and through Hope Alive!’s networking, she received a wheelchair, greatly improving her mobility.
She said, “Thank you, Hope Alive! It’s through you that I managed to get my starting capital for my business and now am able to pay school fees for my other three children. I am starting to see my dream of being able to educate all of my children come true.”
A sponsor’s gift of 105,000 Ugandan shillings (the equivalent of $30 U.S. dollars) had a profound impact on this family. We praise God for the way He multiplied this gift to give this family hope!
