Learning Over Break? Of Course!
In order to equip our young learners to read, write and speak well, our site in Kijabwemi (Masaka) hosted remedial classes during school break for Primary 1-3 students, most of whom were newly registered with Hope Alive! The lessons were conducted by a Hope Alive! alumna and now mentor, Angel Nabiryo, a practicing teacher. The lessons were conducted three times a week for two weeks to help the students develop their academic skills and compete with the other students in their schools.
By the time the children returned to school, they had gained confidence in reading and writing; many had improved their vocabulary, while others were able to join English sentences together and answer questions directed to them in English. Before the lessons some learners were unable to recognize capital and lowercase letters; they were mixing them together, leading to poor handwriting. Now, the students know their letters and have drastically improved their penmanship. The children can also join sounds and read words on their own – it is so impressive in such a short time! The students are reading different story books from our new library under the supervision of their teacher, developing their pronunciation of words correctly. What progress!
We are excited about their improvement and pray that they will continue to practice and implement their new skills in school.
