Ronald’s Journey of Resilience

Ronald’s Journey of Resilience

Byamugisha Ronald was one of the first students enrolled at the Kyabakuza site in 2021 and the first from the Kyabakuza site to enter into a skill-based apprenticeship program instead of traditional schooling. Ronald's life has been full of challenges, marked by uncertainty at home, the effects of alcoholism, and the absence of a father. The alcoholism in his family made it almost impossible for Ronald to be able to attend school; money that could be used for his education or food would often and easily be drunk away, leaving the children with few choices for survival and little hope for a bright future. Would they steal to eat? Sometimes. Would they go hungry? Most of the time. He was adrift in a sea of dysfunction, but GOD saw Ronald and HOPE came to life in his life.

Ronald joined Hope Alive! In 2021, but found school difficult. He worked hard, but his progress was slow, and he was far behind other kids his age. When his mother passed away in 2024, Ronald became a total orphan, and he sensed that traditional schooling was not the route for him. He needed to be able to provide for himself NOW, so he asked the staff of Hope Alive! to allow him to take an alternative educational pathway for motor vehicle mechanics. With no one in his family able to provide for him, Hope Alive!, through the support of his sponsor, was able to pay for his rent and food so that he could focus on his apprenticeship and stay enrolled in the ministry.

Through this apprenticeship program, Ronald has thrived, showing exceptional resilience, dedication, and natural talent.

His teacher says, “Ronald is quick to grasp new skills and is deeply committed to mastering his craft.”

Ronald despises alcohol and has an excellent work ethic. He loves Jesus and is thankful to Him for changing his life. He is still young, still under our care, and still a sponsored student in Hope Alive!. His path was different than we thought when he entered our doors five short years ago, but the living hope of Jesus has made all the difference.

Today, Ronald is not defined by the brokenness of his past but by the determination and hope he carries forward. With his natural skill and growing confidence, he is building a future rooted in stability and purpose. We are celebrating the way God is shaping his story, and cannot wait to see how his hard work and resilience will continue to open new opportunities.

As we all know, there is no “one size fits all” solution for every person. Hope Alive!’s goal is to deeply know every child in our care and work with them to reach their fullest potential.
