Small Steps, Big Results: Tailored Academic Support Made All the Difference
Eleven-year-old Timothy was having a hard time concentrating in class. His mind wandered and his eyes glazed over when his teachers explained their lessons. He struggled to keep up, and he quickly fell behind his classmates in his grades.
With input from his Hope Alive! mentor, who had gotten to know Timothy well, HA! site staff identified the root causes of Timothy’s struggles and created a plan to help him succeed. They helped Timothy set small, achievable goals—practicing active listening for short periods, working with a tutor on his lessons, and learning to break down complex problems into manageable steps. Little by little, Timothy’s performance improved. His confidence grew, his grades climbed, and soon his teachers noticed the change.
As the school year came to an end, Timothy waited anxiously for his results. When he received his report card and saw that he had been promoted to Primary Five (the equivalent of 5th grade), he couldn’t contain his excitement. He ran straight to the Hope Alive! office, shouting, “I have been promoted to Primary Five! This has been a dream come true!”
His mentor said,, “Witnessing Timothy’s transformation has been an absolute privilege. His story serves as a testimony to the power of perseverance, hard work, and targeted support. Timothy, I am incredibly proud of you! Your journey is a shining reminder that each child deserves a chance to thrive and reach their full potential.”

Thanks to the support of our generous sponsors, our mentors and site staff can get to know each student and family individually, so they can provide tailored academic support when it’s needed. Timothy’s story is a beautiful example of how small, intentional steps can lead to big victories.
