Strengthening Families Through Savings and Loan Groups

Strengthening Families Through Savings and Loan Groups

Hope Alive! created savings and loan groups to address economic hardship in the families of our sponsored children. We hoped these groups would eventually help the families break free from economic poverty, but we had no idea how successful the program would become.

Thanks to the financial support of a strategic partner’s charitable foundation, Hope Alive! has used a $30,000 gift to make more than $70,000 so far in small-business loans in Masaka. The loans have gone out, accomplished their goal, been repaid and gone out again!

Slyvia is the mother of Gift, a sponsored student. Slyvia is also among the program's most successful recipients. She was a single mother who struggled to meet her family's basic needs. She led a very difficult life after her spouse left the family. Every day she struggled to pay her bills, find food for her family, and complete the unfinished house that the kids called home. Then she used one of Hope Alive!'s small business loans to start a small business.

Slyvia's life has seen drastic improvement through the success of her small storefront. She is now able to provide for her family's basic needs, the schooling of two other children who are not enrolled in Hope Alive!.  She has even finished the construction of her family home.
