Training Develops Social Skills, Builds Character

Training Develops Social Skills, Builds Character

What does it take to succeed in life, and what gaps exist for children from fragile families in Uganda?

Academic ability? Absolutely.

Practical knowledge? No doubt.

Social skills? Yup, those too!

For fragile families in Uganda, disadvantages and inequities exist in every area of life. At Hope Alive!, we strive to see each and every one of those disadvantages turned into advantages that our students can utilize for their growth. How do you turn something negative into something positive? Well, it starts with talking about it; addressing it head on.

In May, our students in Kampala gathered for a training focused on developing social skills and building character. To succeed in life, students need to learn how to interact in different social circles, need the confidence to know when and how to interact with people from different backgrounds, and, most importantly, need an internal character that shines through no matter what situation they find themselves in.

Our speaker, a local social worker, Mrs. Kamya Betty Kalule, shared from Philippians 4:7 and urged the students to develop Christ-like characteristics: be true to one another, be honest, be a person of integrity, speak the truth at all times, and embrace what you have as you work towards self-improvement. Christian character will honor God, bring a good reputation, attract quality friends, and build a legacy that stands the tests and trials of life.

The students shared the dangers they face in their communities. Yunusu talked about how it’s hard growing up in an area where drugs are used openly. Vicky talked about the peer pressure of other students living lives of risk and unruliness. More spoke about other struggles of urban life in Kampala. Some students expressed appreciation for their spiritual journey and how being part of Hope Alive! has given them a sense of accountability, helping them withstand such vices. Praise God!

Character is a social skill; character matters. With God’s help, we will see shining, Christ-like character in all of our students!
