What We Do

We Disciple

Life-on-life discipleship, over time, with consistent exposure to the transforming love of God. We do what we can do as we trust God to accomplish what only He can do in a person’s life. Our discipleship initiatives are focused in three primary areas: mentorship, Saturday Clubs and special events.

Mentorship

Every Hope Alive! student and their family is assigned a mentor. Every mentor has approximately 10 students. Mentors are godly, wise men and women from local churches who provide guidance, encouragement, and relational support to students and their families.

Saturday Clubs

Every Hope Alive! site hosts three Saturday Clubs per month, every month of the year. Saturday Club is a safe, fun and transformational place for students to hear God’s word, worship, pray, discuss life and have fun together.

Special Events

Regular events and programs at our sites, often with partner churches and partner organizations, engage students, families and their communities in relevant topics and activities.

We Educate

Our educational approach begins with Proverbs 9:10, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.” We want students to know who God is and to walk in faithful obedience to Him as they grow in wisdom, stature and favor with God and man – just as Jesus did (Luke 2:52). Education not only provides opportunity for the student but also provides Hope Alive! opportunities to build relationships and make disciples.

Sponsorships & Scholarships

Through the generosity of our faithful sponsors, we send our students to local schools and pay 100% of the costs of their tuition and school supplies. Other school-related expenses are cost-shared with families as appropriate. Sponsorship continues until students complete secondary school or the diploma level of vocational training. High performing and well-rounded students with a history of active participation in our activities are eligible to apply for scholarships from Hope Alive! that cover the costs of university or other tertiary institutions.

Services to Students

We also seek to help students beyond their normal school experiences. This includes tutoring  or enrichment on the weekends and during school holidays. Counseling and guidance are also provided throughout their educational journey. Additionally, we encourage students to read books in the small, but growing libraries at each site. Skills, hygiene and health trainings are provided based upon student needs and interests.

Support to Schools

The more we support schools and strengthen the professional capacities of teachers, the greater the benefits to our students and their communities. We desire to support our students’ teachers in a variety of ways, including professional development, participation in literacy initiatives, and provision of resources and learning materials. Furthermore, we seek to improve schools by supporting their meal programs and other relevant initiatives.

We Empower

Education alone isn’t enough if opportunities aren’t available. Our empowerment programs exist to ensure opportunities exist for everyone! These empowerment initiatives are focused on two main areas: financial empowerment and skill building.

Financial Empowerment

We offer the Hope Alive! family a variety of savings and loan initiatives designed to break the cycles of generational poverty in the families and communities we serve.

Skill Building

We offer training and educational opportunities to the entire Hope Alive! family on a variety of topics and through a variety of experiences that can help families move from fragile to flourishing.

Where is the Need?

Fifty percent of Uganda’s population is under 18 years old. More than one-third of Ugandans live on less than two dollars a day. Many live in single-room huts with no running water or electricity, some with as many as eight or ten people living in that one room. Some of the children impacted are orphans, some have only a mother, and many are living with a relative. Often a single woman, unskilled and uneducated, will care for several of her relatives’ children in addition to her own. In some households, children are the head caregivers.

Hope Alive! began in 2002 as a relief and development project to address the devastation caused by the 20-year civil war waged by the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) rebels under Joseph Kony. We continue to focus on the development and support of orphans and fragile families in Uganda, specifically in the slums of Kampala, the capital city; in the poor towns of Masaka and Kyabakuza in southwestern Uganda; and in the rural areas of Koro (Gulu) in northern Uganda, where the war had the greatest impact.

Hope Alive! works closely with local churches to share the Gospel and love of Christ with these children and their families, and to break the cycle of poverty plaguing them by meeting their need to education.

“He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.”
– Colossians 1:13-14, ESV

“But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be the glory both now and to the day of eternity. Amen.”
– 2 Peter 3:18, ESV
