Food Production Graduate Finds His Sweet Spot In Catering
On the 2nd of March 2018, Innocent was among the 389 students who graduated from Jimmy Sekasi Business Institute with a diploma in Food Production. Those who attended the graduation ceremony witnessed the overflowing excitement on Innocent’s face.
Innocent’s father died abruptly under unclear circumstances when Innocent was a child. With the demise of the family’s main bread winner, life became very hard for Innocent and his siblings. At the age of 14, Innocent was enrolled into Hope Alive!. That is when he experienced a turning point. He says, “I was able to complete primary education and later join secondary school with the aid and sponsorship from Hope Alive!, which ensured that I had all my school fees cleared and scholastic materials provided.”
Passion is important in selecting a career, and Innocent was spot on in choosing to study Food Production. He notes, “Because of my passion and desire for cooking, after completing my senior four [equivalent of 11th grade in the U.S.], I opted for a vocational career. This led me to join Jimmy Sekasi Business Institute in 2015, to pursue a certificate and later a diploma [roughly equivalent to an A.A. degree in the U.S.] in Food Production."
Innocent hopes to join one of the finest hotels in Uganda, Serena Kigo, as a chef. He has been doing an internship and has caught the eye of his supervisor. His future dream is to become an executive chef. “I believe the sky is the limit,” says Innocent. When Innocent talks about catering, it is evident that he has found his sweet spot, a thing many graduates miss out on.
