"Man Up and Go" Part 1: Empowering Men Through Faith and Business
An Inside Look at the Man Up and Go Program
The Man Up and Go program is transforming the lives of men by equipping them with the tools to thrive as fathers, husbands, and community leaders. Absentee fathers and pervasive alcoholism have left many young men with few older men to look up to and learn from. With the consistent presence of male mentors and the Man Up and Go program, we are hopeful that the next generation of men in Uganda will grow into loving husbands, caring fathers and servant leaders of their communities*. This 22-week initiative offers a holistic approach to development, combining spiritual growth with practical business skills.
The program begins with a 12-week discipleship phase, focusing on what it means to be a man of integrity who answers God’s unique callings. Participants learn how to embody their roles in their families and communities, walking in faith and serving others.
*A similar program for young women is being developed in Masaka and Koro (Gulu)
Following this foundation, the business training phase spans 10 weeks and introduces participants to entrepreneurship basics, marketing strategies, and financial management. These tools enable them to build or expand businesses that meet local needs and create opportunities. Many graduates have had the opportunity to apply for a $500 microloan, using it to jumpstart a new venture or grow an existing enterprise.
This dual focus on faith and entrepreneurship has proven impactful, fostering personal growth and community transformation. To date, the program has been implemented in the Koro (Gulu) community, and has recently begun in Kampala.
GJ Flikweert, a missionary who serves with Hope Alive! and oversees the program, underscores the importance of the initiative: “Man Up and Go is about more than providing skills. It’s about equipping men to be leaders in their families, churches, and communities.”
