When One Door Closes, Another Opens
This past week, at the Koro Saturday Club, Tessa and I had the opportunity to meet the founder of Hope Alive!, Catherine Coon. It was amazing to hear more of her story, how God has worked through her to start this organization, and how far they have come in almost 20 years. In preparation for Catharine’s arrival, we helped the children practice for their Saturday Club performances where they would honor Catherine and welcome the new executive director, Caleb Smagacz. This time of celebration was also an opportunity for the Koro site to show its appreciation for the long-time workers that have faithfully supported the students and administration.
The morning began with a warm welcome from the care givers and staff of Hope Alive!. When we arrived, we saw the large tent that had been set up to support the sizable attendance for that day. We then walked into the main hall that was decorated with the drawings and verses that the children had made for Catherine and Caleb. After greeting everyone, we sat down at a table that had been prepared for us near the front of the room. We sang and worshiped together before Catherine gave a small Bible lesson for the day. It was truly so colorful and a blessing to be a part of.
All of the children presented different performances with singing and dancing. Even the care givers and mentors performed traditional dances for Catherine and Caleb. We all enjoyed cake and the time we spent with one another. Catherine was presented with a number of gifts throughout the day, including two paintings. It was amazing to see the children pour their hearts into honoring her and welcoming Caleb. While there were some tears of sadness that Catharine would no longer be living in Uganda, there were even more shouts of excitement. Most Ugandan celebrations last an entire day through sundown; however, we kept to the normal Saturday Club hours, 9:00 AM – 3:00 PM.
I am so thankful to have been able to be a part of such an amazing day and see just a fraction of the love that the people of this community hold for Catherine and Hope Alive!. Every piece was intentional and honoring. We praise and thank God for all He has done through Catherine and Hope Alive!; we continue to praise Him as we look forward to what the future holds for this wonderful organization and the children of Uganda.
