Improving Health, Decreasing Exposure to Disease
Because of the extreme poverty of our students’ families, many children come to Hope Alive! underfed or malnourished. Most families eat only two meals per day, some only one, and meat is considered a luxury. Hope Alive! tries to combat this issue in a variety of ways.
- We pay for our students to have lunch at school.
- We serve breakfast and lunch at their thrice-monthly Saturday clubs.
- We provide significant amounts of food each month to child-headed households.
- We provide extra help during school holidays for especially impoverished families, as the children aren’t getting lunch at school during these times.
We do our best to ensure that our students are current on their vaccinations. Throughout the year, we give lessons in basic health-care skills and hygiene, including the importance of hand-washing, brushing teeth, how to avoid getting worms, etc.
