Flourishing Together: Family Business Boost

Jascent, a Hope Alive! mentor in Masaka, used a loan from her savings and loan group to open a shop in a neighboring town. Through hard work and careful management, she repaid her loan and eventually borrowed from her group again to open a second shop. Today she manages both!

Deborah took out a loan from her savings group to purchase a piglet. That piglet grew up and had a litter of ten pigs. She planned to sell the pigs and grow her business. Together with her husband she's providing for their children and building a brighter future.

Evaline, a Hope Alive!'s student's mom, borrowed 250,000 Ugandan shillings from her savings group--about $57--to buy a bag of groundnut (peanut) seeds and a goat. Despite the ongoing drought, she was able to harvest five bags of peanuts, and her goat is doing well too. Through saving, borrowing and investing wisely, Evaline is gradually strengthening her family's economic resilience and creating opportunities to better support her daughter's education.

Francis, a student's dad, saved faithfully through his caregivers' savings and loan group, and took out a loan of 150,000 Ugandan shillings--about $34--to buy vegetable seeds. He carefully tended his crop and harvested and sold three bags of vegetables. The extra income helped him buy food and meet other basic needs of his family. He hopes to save more and expand the projects on his farm.

This Giving Tuesday, we're launching Flourishing Together: Family Business Boost to help caretakers grow their businesses, strengthen their livelihoods, and build greater financial stability for their families.

Your gift will increase the funds available for business loans within established, qualifying savings and loan groups. Paired with practical training and the determination of caregivers, these loans can help families build more reliable sources of income. Best of all, as loans are repaid, those funds become available to help others, extending the impact for years to come.

(Our fundraising goal for this project is $4,000. If we are blessed to receive funds in excess of that goal, any additional funds will be added to the University Scholarship Fund.)
