Keeping Students Engaged in Positive Activities

For many children, much of life revolves around survival – working to put food on the table, fetching clean water, mending, digging and gardening, etc. They don’t get much opportunity to relax and have fun. Three times a month, Hope Alive! offers Saturday Club, a time of refreshment after a long week. The children are treated to Bible studies, a time to praise and worship their great God, workshops on life skills, and a fun time of simply playing games.

Three times a year, at the end of every school term, students take part in a Fun Day. This is a day to celebrate the completion of exams and the beginning of a short break from school. The day is filled with group games, crazy activities, lots of laughter, fun, and good food.

During the three-week school holidays and the break between school years, Hope Alive! offers students special opportunities to learn valuable skills, continue Bible studies and—very simply—to forget their harsh lives and just be children for a while.

Students are also given the opportunity to develop their leadership skills by being involved in Student Leadership Teams. The teams are made up of ten students, elected by their fellow Hope Alive! members at each site. Each team meets together regularly to discuss student issues and concerns, as well as ideas they have to improve the site. They also help plan and organize some of the Hope Alive! events throughout the year. A highlight is the annual week-long Student Leadership Summit, where all three teams come together for leadership training, encouragement, in-depth Bible study, and fun times of recreation.
